A Guide to the Best Keyless Door Locks of 2022
/In today’s fast-paced, technology-reliant world, it’s no wonder that we are starting to look for ways to upgrade our homes. One of the easiest and most beneficial home upgrades I have ever performed was to install a keyless lock on my front door. Read on to learn more about the features and benefits of installing one in your home.
To help you select which one is best for you, I have outlined the various features below along with a list of the best keyless door locks currently available.
UPDATED: May 3, 2022.
MY TOP PICK:
If you are looking for the best overall, I recommend the Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt because it features an exterior keypad with a backup lock cylinder and can store up to 30 entry codes.
What is a keyless door lock?
Just like modern home safes and garage door openers, keyless door locks have a keypad with a unique code that will unlock your door. They can also be referred to as “smart locks” if they include features such as Wifi connectivity and app integration.
These locks give you the opportunity to safely access your home without having to worry about carrying a bulky keychain or misplacing your keys. But there are also many other benefits to consider.
Benefits of Going Keyless
If you host an Airbnb, short-term rental, vacation home, or sublet a room in your house, the locks give you a safe way to grant access to current guests without compromising the safety of future guests. No need to worry about meeting in person, dealing with clunky lockboxes, or changing the locks after a problematic houseguest. These locks are also perfect for traditional landlords. When you transfer the home over to a new tenant, simply change the code.
For regular homeowners, the benefits are just as far-reaching. Relatives over for the holidays? Hiring a pet sitter, house sitter, or babysitter? Set a temporary code so they can easily come in and out, then delete the code after their stay. Going for a quick run around the park? You don’t have to worry about dropping your keys or fitting a cumbersome chain into your pocket.

Safety
Keyless door locks are also a great tool to ensure the safety of small children or to keep private documents safe. You can install the lock on an office door, garage door, basement door, or master bedroom. Instead of keeping a key on the door frame or carrying your keys with you all the time, you’ll be able to enter the room swiftly while keeping your family safe.
Here of some features and components to be aware of when selecting a specific model:
Method of Power
Most are powered by one or several standard batteries such as a 9V, AA, or AAA. This has the benefit of being able to quickly swap out a new battery so the lock is never out of commission. If it were a fixed battery like a smartphone it would require waiting for it to charge, making the lock unusable from the outside, unless it has a key backup.
Key Backup
As the name implies, a lock with a key backup will include a standard keyed lock. This allows access without using the keypad or in the event the batteries are dead.
Smartphone Access
Some lock models offer the ability to use an app on your smartphone to unlock or lock the door. This is a great feature to have when you are on vacation or away from home. If you suddenly get the feeling you may have left the door open you can check it immediately. Another reason this feature might be helpful is if someone needs to access your house and you are not home you can simply open it for them.
These systems vary by manufacturer, however, the standard setup is to connect the lock to your home WiFi. Then download the app to your phone that is associated with the system, such as the Schlage app. This will then allow you to control various features of the door and monitor its open status. Some also offer the ability to link it to your home security system to control everything from one app.
Auto-Lock
A feature offered by some of these locks is the ability to enable auto-lock. This automatically locks your door after a set period of time. This is a great way to ensure your door always remains locked whether you are home or not.
It can be turned on and off since you may find it annoying in certain circumstances. For example, if you are working on something and constantly coming in and out of the house, having to unlock the door every time would be a pain.
Backlit Keypad
Most of these locks will offer backlit digits that make it much easier to see in low-light or dark conditions. For example, coming home at night without an outdoor light, the illuminated keys are very helpful.
Finish Materials
Ideally, the material you select for your lock should match the other hardware on your door for a cohesive appearance. The most common material finishes are nickel, oil bronze, and stainless steel as they can stand up to the constant outdoor exposure.
Another thing to keep in mind when selecting a material finish is how visible it will be at night. My keyless lock has a matte black finish which looks great but it can be hard to see when coming home at night. Lighter finishes such as nickel will tend to show up better in low-light conditions.
Installation
I found the installation of my smart lock to be no more difficult than installing a standard deadbolt. If you simply follow the included instructions it is quite straightforward with minimal tools required (usually just a screwdriver). The only real differences compared with a keyed lock are the addition of batteries and setting a custom code.

Now, on to the individual products. I’ve compiled a list of the top models available from well-known manufacturers including Schlage, Kwikset, and more.
